Chapter Twelve

Avery and Sprinkles walked toward her vineyard office. Nestled between the vines, it was always an enjoyable walk. Even on rainy days. Luckily for them, they stayed dry that morning.

She walked slowly, hoping to work off some of the large breakfast she had before continuing with her day. Her breakfasts were usually a lot smaller, so all she wanted to do was lie down on the couch and sleep it off. But something told her it was going to be a busy day at the vineyard.

As she walked, she considered everything that Charles had told her about the case so far. Her mind flipped through every detail, trying to piece it all together. They knew who the victim was, they knew he had a creepy and dangerous friend, and they knew that he was tied to a famous murder case.

He had been there for five years, that much was known, and he had been pushed hard from a height and fallen to his death. To Avery, that was the largest part of the puzzle.

Where had he fallen from?

It nagged at her, because she was certain that without the answer to that question, they were never going to solve the case. Someone had pushed him, and he was buried in a vine where he had decayed for five years, taking any further clues with him.

Avery tried to remember the last time she had heard or seen a plane fly over Los Robles. It had never been a common event. In fact, it was one of the first things that had fascinated her when she visited the city the first time.

She had run out every time she heard the rumble to take a look at the shiny planes as they flew overhead and she marveled at how small they were from the ground. Eventually, she had grown accustomed to the sound and it no longer excited her.

But now, it was certainly a sound that was missing from Los Robles. The only planes that ever flew over their town were either news crews, or tours, or they were crop dusters. None of those planes had any reason to be flying over the spot where Paul’s body had been discovered.

Sarah’s vineyard didn’t use crop dusters, Avery knew that for a fact. And, the fall would have been from a higher altitude than that of a crop duster. If Paul had been on a news crew’s plane then there would have been some sign that he would be joining them. Their plane would have been officially listed as having flown over on that day, and his name would have been on the log. It would have been the same for planes or helicopters providing tours.

Although there once used to be many aerial tours in Los Robles, they had come to an end well more than five years ago. Not only had the noise become a problem, but the vineyard and farm owners complained about the pollution and the invasion of privacy.

The privacy part had happened after a tour helicopter flew over a farmer’s house while he had been sunbathing.
